Police Chief Rodney Monroe told the Observer the city is "seeing a demonstration every other day." He spoke to reporters at the unveiling of a new mobile crime scene unit on Tuesday.
Occupy Charlotte protesters remain camped out in front of the old city hall building, which is located across the street from police headquarters. Someone has put metal barricades around the fallen officer's memorial, apparently to keep protesters from disturbing it.
On November 16, eight protesters were arrested after climbing the flag pole in front of Bank of America headquarters on Tryon Street and unfurling a sign that said "Not with our money." Monroe said that group is from California and "they brought their whole network here."
A few moments after Monroe spoke, a half dozen protesters -- including a child sitting on a man's shoulders holding a cardboard sign that had been scribbled on with purple crayon -- began walking up Trade Street, toward the Square, chanting slogans. -- Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

ReplyDeleteI had to walk through this same group who BLOCKED the sidewalk because they are so out-of-touch with the rights of anyone else. This same, exact group, on Alexander Street at lunch time. They are a pitiful group of misguided, non-led people. I am FAR from a rich soccer mom, BTW, and you better believe they yielded enough room for me to walk on the sidewalk when I insisted.

They will not clean anyone out. It's a violation of civil rights if they attempt to take away the right to assemble and protest. Go the hell back to southpark mall and quite making useless threats.

ReplyDeleteI didn't make any threats. I don't live near southpark. Charlotte consists of more than a one mile area. The police will eventually clean out the campers and it sounds like some of the protesters will be aggressive when that time comes. I don't know if you have been paying attention but the courts are upholding moving the campers out while still respecting people's rights to assemble.

ReplyDeleteHas anyone actually SEEN the people that are still protesting uptown? I understand that there were some contributing members of society that created the movement, but the folks that continue to camp appear to have just moved uptown from under one of the I77 overpasses.

ReplyDeleteSo I guess the fools in the police department go crazy on Halloween when people of all ages wear masks all up and down the street. I have not seen these people who are protesting the banks and the greedy south charlotte folks, so it is strange that they would be wearing masks anyway. Frankly, no one cares about a stupid law like the one above. Criminals will wear masks when they rob and steal. No need to punish innocent people on Halloween or who are having a good time. More of the archaic, ancient, right wing laws that NC thrives on having. Sick.
