Police seeing more protests in Charlotte

City leaders expect droves of protesters to descend on the Queen City when the Democratic National Convention hits Charlotte next September, but police say they've already seen an increased number of sign-bearing malcontents.

Police Chief Rodney Monroe told the Observer the city is "seeing a demonstration every other day." He spoke to reporters at the unveiling of a new mobile crime scene unit on Tuesday.

Occupy Charlotte protesters remain camped out in front of the old city hall building, which is located across the street from police headquarters. Someone has put metal barricades around the fallen officer's memorial, apparently to keep protesters from disturbing it.

On November 16, eight protesters were arrested after climbing the flag pole in front of Bank of America headquarters on Tryon Street and unfurling a sign that said "Not with our money." Monroe said that group is from California and "they brought their whole network here."

A few moments after Monroe spoke, a half dozen protesters -- including a child sitting on a man's shoulders holding a cardboard sign that had been scribbled on with purple crayon -- began walking up Trade Street, toward the Square, chanting slogans. -- Cleve R. Wootson Jr.

  2. Trash? Maybe it's you who are trashy. You and the rest of the rich soccer moms down in Ballantine. I hope you burn in Hell.

  3. I had to walk through this same group who BLOCKED the sidewalk because they are so out-of-touch with the rights of anyone else. This same, exact group, on Alexander Street at lunch time. They are a pitiful group of misguided, non-led people. I am FAR from a rich soccer mom, BTW, and you better believe they yielded enough room for me to walk on the sidewalk when I insisted.

Then again, maybe she's right and you're the one who's trashy. You and the rest of the poor filth down at city hall. I hope you rot in hell.

  5. May God have mercy on your lying soul. It's the rich and greedy that will split hell wide open: You and the rest of the sorry republicans with your greed. These people have the right to protest. We are sick of being taken advantage of. No protestor is misguided here, and they are very in touch with the real problem: YOU and your rich, greedy kind. Shame on you. Takes an elitist to demand from everyone like you are so used to.

unreal hate. Looks like the police will be dealing with some pretty aggressive people when its time to clean you out.

    ReplyDelete
  7. They will not clean anyone out. It's a violation of civil rights if they attempt to take away the right to assemble and protest. Go the hell back to southpark mall and quite making useless threats.

  8. Pretty sure no one in this city is "Rich".. You think six figures is rich???? Maybe if your kids actually went to a respectable college and had SOMETHING that resembled a work ethic you wouldn't have problems. Im from New York, and I can't believe how lazy you people are down here.

Don't protest, teach your children how to read first. Maybe when they grow up they won't be poor like you, but I doubt it because they are headed straight for the service industry at 18.

  9. Great, more sorry trash from the north. You are here for a reason, so it's you who are lazy and couldn't face the challenges in the state you came from. Pitiful.

  10. No I'm here because the sun shines 70% of the year and the women are gorgeous... But nice try

  11. More lies. That's what all of you are good at. We will protest what we want, when we want.

  13. do you even know what youre protesting or are you using it as an excuse to not work?

  14. My friend Brian Roberts was going to go to the protest but he went to a gnarly kegger the night before and was too hungover

  15. If you guys can't find a rational way to take it over, you aren't going to win... You can't change the republicans' minds. So run for office yourself... If there is so many of you that believe in this "movement' then there has to be ONE of you that can be the voice. That is the only way you are getting my respect.

I didn't make any threats. I don't live near southpark. Charlotte consists of more than a one mile area. The police will eventually clean out the campers and it sounds like some of the protesters will be aggressive when that time comes. I don't know if you have been paying attention but the courts are upholding moving the campers out while still respecting people's rights to assemble.

Yeah... so you are the one without a job camped out on the city hall steps but the people with jobs (in Charlotte) are lazy...

  18. seriously? Is this the best that either of you can produce in terms of intelligent discussion? Good grief, no wonder we're in trouble.

  19. We haven't seen anything yet. If the city was smart, it would pass an ordnance making it illegal for adults to wear face masks during demonstrations. Black Bloc is on its way, and it will turn downtown into a war zone.

  22. Im not a protestor my man, I am from NY and I work at the bank. I am totally against the laziness that is going on here buddy.. C'mon

    ReplyDelete
  23. @NY. Apparently you are on here just to bash charlotte and it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Maybe you didn't notice but the OWS started in NYC. The movement isn't about Charlotte. But anyway you couldn't cut it in NYC so now you are here. By all means use all of you non lazy powers to make a job in NYC and move back. Oh sorry Merrill is gone and lazy Charlotte had to bail you out and make a job for you.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No I am on here to bash the protestors and the reason's I am here over NY has nothing to do with the job I have, but alright man. Good one.

  25. Has anyone actually SEEN the people that are still protesting uptown? I understand that there were some contributing members of society that created the movement, but the folks that continue to camp appear to have just moved uptown from under one of the I77 overpasses.

  26. @ Anon 11:58-- NC does have laws banning masks in public.

§14-12.7. Wearing of masks, hoods, etc., on public ways.
No person or persons at least 16 years of age shall, while wearing any mask, hood or device whereby the person, face or voice is disguised so as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter, be or appear upon any lane, walkway, alley, street, road, highway or other public way in this State. (1953, c. 1193, s. 6; 1983, c. 175, ss. 1, 10; c. 720, s. 4.)
§14-12.8. Wearing of masks, hoods, etc., on public property.
No person or persons shall in this State, while wearing any mask, hood or device whereby the person, face or voice is disguised so as to conceal the identity of the wearer, enter, or appear upon or within the public property of any municipality or county of the State, or of the State of North Carolina. (1953, c. 1193, s. 7.)

  27. I saw them wearing zombie masks, vampire masks, ghost masks, frankenstein masks, shark masks, snake masks, hobgoblin masks, demon masks, gholie masks.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh my goodness! Masks! So I take it that everyone that hates the protesters thinks the banks and government are okay to be unregulated? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  29. My friend Brian Roberts bought some gnarly masks and made some rockin brownies to bring to the protest but his mom found his stash and grouded him

    ReplyDelete
  30. So I guess the fools in the police department go crazy on Halloween when people of all ages wear masks all up and down the street. I have not seen these people who are protesting the banks and the greedy south charlotte folks, so it is strange that they would be wearing masks anyway. Frankly, no one cares about a stupid law like the one above. Criminals will wear masks when they rob and steal. No need to punish innocent people on Halloween or who are having a good time. More of the archaic, ancient, right wing laws that NC thrives on having. Sick.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Guess it's ok to wear a Pat McCreery mask though. Whatever suits the backward thinking, republican homophobes of Charlotte.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anon 2:10, if you'd bothered to read the posts, you would have seen that I possed the NC law in response to Anon 11:58's comment about the Black Bloc anarchists and the bandanas they usually wear.

Your comment about that "stupid law" being "archaic, ancient, right wing" reinforces the fact that you know nothing about history. The law was passed to protect people from the anonymity of the Klu Klux Klan's intimidation.

  33. Anon 2:02 Bummer on the rockin brownies and the grounding.

    ReplyDelete
  34. To 2:19......Sounds like you just slapped yourself in the face. If you had any bloody sense, you would realize you just confirmed my point. If that is the reason the law was initially passed, then it truly is archaic and ancient. I wish you luck, you North Carolina lover!

  35. 2:44, you've yet to make a point, what you have done is proven the adage, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing."
Now, run along and go look up "adage."

  36. PUMP UP THE VOLUME OCCUPIERS!!!!! GO! GO! GO!!!! YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF MANY!!!!

  37. Awwww, look at the cute little anarchist!! Whats the matter? Run out of allowance?

  38. I would not like to see OWS anti democrat movement protesting during the convention. If Joneboro Church can be controlled by allowing them someplace far away from the public eye to protest, then by all means Charlotte, apply the Jonesboro treatment.

  39. I think 3:44 means Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.

President Obama's slow ride down Gallup's daily presidential job approval index has finally passed below Jimmy Carter, earning Obama the worst job approval rating of any president at this stage of his term in modern political history.

  42. We hope so.

We are helping to get them together and organized, as we feel the parties should cut back on the partying and use the money to help people retrain for jobs with the money they will waste.

All political parties should use this time to show they really care.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm hoping all those demonstrators occupy the office of the county manager while here. I'm sure he has a shower and a john attached. Ole Harry won't notice; he will be out partying, partaking of the dem's dollars and hospitality. What are the chances he will retire and be Jennifer's campaign chief? He can triple dip, that way.
